One of the most common complaints about skiing is that it is cold. But, embracing winter is a big part of the ski lifestyle. Being in the mountains in winter is an amazing experience, and skiing is one of the best ways to enjoy what nature has to offer.
But, the problem is it is cold out there. And, what seems cold to some, is bitter cold to others. For many skiers, the one thing that is difficult is keeping the feet warm. Our feet are the furthest part of our body from the heart, and we are engineered to keep the most important parts of us warm first. So, circulation is prioritized, and the feet are last.
Problem solved. With the recent evolution of battery technology, thanks to the billions of smart phones sold, it is possible to now produce heat with much less weight and bulk. Batteries are far more durable, and not nearly so finicky about sitting unused for longer periods of time. So, heated boots are coming onto the market from just about every manufacturer.
Here are a couple we think are worthy of special mention here.
Rossignol Pure Pro Heat is a heated version of one of our favorite boots for good lady skiers, the Pure Pro 100. And, it may the the coolest (or maybe hottest) ski boot ever made. The 100mm medium width last is a well proven, great fitting boot and 100 flex is perfect for the advanced to expert lady skier. Selling at $599, it is only $100 more than the non heated version. For your extra $100, you get very slim Lithium Ion batteries built into the rear of the liner, with controls for the heat system integrated into the liner cuff. But, download the free Thermic app, and full control is now on your phone's screen. There are 10 heat settings, and two heat modes; choose Eco mode, and get 4 minutes heat, and then 2 minutes of no heat. Or choose Motion mode, and the heat turns on when you stop moving (like sitting on a chair lift). There is also a Pure Heat model available, with a 102mm wider last and softer 70 flex, but without the built in Blue Tooth remote control capability. This boot sells at $499.
K2 Recon 120 Heat and Luv 100 Heat are all new K2 models for 2019. Recon (and Luv) is a brand new series from K2, emphasizing the same powerful feel on the snow K2 has become known for, but with an all new Powerlite Shelll design, making them one of the lightest Alpine boots on the market. The Lithium Ion powered heat system is built into the back of the liner, totally concealed inside the boot. Three different heat settings are controlled by a push of the rubber sealed button on the upper cuff. Recon is a great fitting, great skiing boot and the 120 flex is perfect for an aggressive guy who wants to ski everywhere, everyday. Luv for ladies offers the same performance, and the 100 flex is perfect for the advanced lady skier. $649 is the price for these fantastic new heated boots from K2.
Returning with just a cosmetic change is the K2 BFC 90W Heat for ladies (and the BFC 100 Heat for men). BFC stands for Built for Comfort, and that is what these models are all about. Roomy last shape, and lots of cush make these easy boots to spend the day in. And with the built in Thermic Heat system, never have cold feet again. Walk feature on the back of these boots allows the upper cuff to be unlatched, making them easier to stand in and walk in. Ski boots have never been this comfortable before. K2 has hit a huge BFC home run, and the heat system makes it just that much better. With so many features, and built in heat, $549.00 makes these an outstanding value.
Keeping your feet happy will make skiing easier and more fun. There is nothing else you but in ski gear that affects, comfort, performance and warmth. Ski boots are the most important ski gear any of us will buy. This is not the place to compromise! Get heat, be warm, ski more runs, and have more fun.
